The Washington Post
This photo editor will be expected to source, acquire and edit breaking-news photos, create galleries, and write and edit captions and short posts to accompany them. This work is integral to our breaking-news team’s reporting efforts, and the Seoul-based photo editor will often lead the newsroom’s visual coverage in breaking-news situations during the overnight hours in Washington.
Typical duties in this role might look like:
- Building a gallery and writing captions for it
- Writing feeds for a live-updates file and identifying visual-first feed possibilities
- Helping colleagues source images for high-potential visual stories
- Writing a short news story and sourcing wire photos for it
The successful candidate possesses a strong news radar, sharp storytelling skills and a talent for finding emerging stories and angles. Candidates should be committed to speed, clarity and accuracy and should be agile in shifting rapidly from subject to subject while reaching a massive digital audience. The bulk of stories launched by the breaking-news teams require rapid turnaround, so comfort and confidence in sourcing photos, sequencing, editing and captioning visual presentations on deadline is essential. An interest in reporting and writing is welcomed.
This role requires at least three years of experience in a fast-paced English-language newsroom environment, strong news judgment and the ability to multitask. Familiarity with acquiring and verifying photographs, particularly those surfaced from social media, is key. Proficiency in handling photographs quickly using Adobe products and Photo Mechanic is required. This position reports to the Photography Department but will take tactical direction on a day-to-day basis from editors in the Seoul hub.
This position will be staffed through TWP South Korea LLC in South Korea, subject to local legal requirements. There will be a preference for candidates already based in the region, but we may consider applicants from within our organization who are currently located in the United States. This position will be staffed on a five-day shift that includes a weekend day; it will be based in Seoul and is not eligible for remote work.
Interested candidates should upload a résumé with links to their work and a cover letter outlining the experience they would bring to the position to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 09/21/2022 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Director of Photography MaryAnne Golon, Foreign Editor Douglas Jehl and Seoul Hub Editor Kendra Nichols.
