Overview & Responsibilities
The International Development Law Organization (IDLO) enables governments and empowers people to reform laws and strengthen institutions to promote peace, justice, sustainable development and economic opportunity. The Reducing the Impact of Insecurity on Afghanistan’s Legal System (RIIALS) program is a multi-year, research and development project. Under the RIIALS program, IDLO aims to build on IDLO’s existing efforts to assist justice service providers such as civil society organizations, legal practitioners, and customary and informal justice actors to help them gain a better understanding of the risks they face when providing justice services and develop appropriate responses. The project will include providing partner institutions with assistance to improve their policies and procedures, and to pilot new interventions. To that end, IDLO will conduct assessments on the state of the justice sector and maintain a justice sector online observatory to monitor the state of the justice system.
Under the direct supervision of the Contractor will work under the supervision of the RIIALS Project Team Manager (PTM), in coordination with the IDLO Translation Team Manager, the Contractor shall translate documents between Pashto to English and provide simultaneous interpretation between Pashto and English during the contract period.
The Contractor will conduct the following activities:
- Translate interview data, decrees and laws from Pashto to English.
- Translate of reports and documents from English to Pashto.
- Translate a detailed assessment report from English to Pashto.
- Translate letters, and other project related documents between English and Pashto.
- Incorporate feedback on translations to ensure high quality and accurate translation of documents related to the project.
- Provide simultaneous interpretation between Pashto and English in meetings.
Job Requirements
Ideal Candidate Profile
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in law; Dari, Pashto, English language, or literature; journalism; gender studies; or a related field. Advanced university degree (masters or equivalent) in related field would be preferred.
- Experience working in the Afghan legal sector would be an advantage.
- Demonstrated ability to translate highly technical documents.
- Demonstrated ability to provide quality interpretation services.
- Knowledge of Afghan legal concepts, terminology and language.
SKILLS
- Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines, flexibility and an entrepreneurial spirit.
- Proven ability to see through tasks set and deliver results.
- Excellent editing and proofreading skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with extensive experience drafting and editing documents in English and Dari or Pashto, depending on the requirements of the position.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
