FHI 360

FHI 360 staff working in the United States are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, regardless of the type of project or client they serve, or of their employment status (full/part-time, remote, telework, or in-office), unless an accommodation applies. Provides legal advice, counsel, and oversight for basic to complex legal matters affecting the organization. Areas of advice and counsel include but are not limited to compliance, contracting, employment, risk management, and governance in US and international operations. Serves as Office of General Counsel representative to internal clients on legal, administrative and management issues. Manages outside counsel, as assigned by the General Counsel. Formulates courses of action, drafts correspondence, policies, or procedures to resolve legal, procedural or administrative issues and ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

This position has the option to be remote, but successful candidates will need to be located in either the Washington, DC or Durham, NC areas.

Accountabilities:

  • Provides legal advice, counsel and oversight for legal matters affecting the organization globally. Serves as Office of General Counsel representative to internal clients on legal and related issues.
  • Engages and manages the work of outside counsel.
  • Interacts with funding entities, government and regulatory agencies to ensure legal compliance.
  • Counsels on legal matters to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Supports the work of the Office of General Counsel.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Applied Knowledge & Skills:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, practices, procedures and principles of corporate law as applied to non-profit organizations and international operations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work effectively with organizational managers and staff. Ability to manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to influence, motivate, and negotiate with internal client offices and external entities. Ability to present complex information clearly and succinctly to management.

Problem Solving & Impact:

  • Works on a variety of abstract problems and situations across functional areas of the organization.
  • Identifies and evaluates issues, providing counsel and direction to management and others throughout the organization.
  • Recognizes issues facing the organization, as necessary, learns and supports training staff on those issues.
  • Decisions made have a significant impact on the success of functional and organizational operations.

Supervision Given/Received:

  • Supervises and administers all necessary legal and business services in assigned matters, in conjunction with other legal counsel (inside or outside the organization) as required.
  • Assists General Counsel with recommendations and solutions to be compliant with federal, state and local laws applicable to the organization.
  • Typically reports to the General Counsel of the organization.

Education:

  • Master’s Degree or its International Equivalent from a recognized school of law. Juris Doctor strongly preferred. Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
  • Necessary Special Qualification: Bar Association Membership

Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience with a law firm, corporate legal department, or organization.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in one or more particular fields of legal specialization as set forth above.
  • International experience is required; prior experience working with international development or humanitarian organizations is preferred.
  • Articulate, professional and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner with clients and staff.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English.

Typical Physical Demands:

  • Typical office environment.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Ability to move or lift 5-50 lbs.

Computer, Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), e-mail, telephone, printer, calculator, copier, cell phones, PDAs and other hand held devices.

Travel Requirements:

Less than 10%
