AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS ASSISTANT GROUP LEADER

Immigrant Social Services, Inc. (ISS) seeks enthusiastic and dedicated Afterschool Programs Assistant Group Leaders to join our team. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about working with children and are eager to gain experience in a supportive and nurturing environment. As an Assistant Group Leader, you will help create a positive, engaging, and safe space for children to learn and play for participants (Pre-K through 8th Grade) in our afterschool programs.

The ideal candidate is committed to nurturing children and youth through positive youth development and the whole-child approach. While previous formal experience working with children/youth is not required, a willingness to learn and a passion for working with young people is essential and any experience in babysitting, tutoring, or volunteering with youth is beneficial.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Group Leader in planning and implementing a variety of enrichment activities and/or theme-based projects that are engaging, purposeful, developmentally appropriate, and aligned with our program. These will include existing ISS-developed curricula and lesson ideas as well as group leader-developed activities. Training, guidance, and assessment will be provided.
  • Work under the guidance of the Group Leader and program site leadership staff to gain experience and develop skills in youth work.
  • Supervise and engage with children during activities, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Assist students with their homework.
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where every child feels valued and respected.
  • Support the Group Leader in maintaining a clean and organized environment.
  • Help manage the daily schedule, including transitions between activities and meal times.
  • Encourage positive behavior and help resolve conflicts in a gentle and constructive manner.
  • Proactively communicate regularly with program site leadership staff about any issues, including but not limited to behavioral challenges, scheduling, and curricula.
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions to continually improve skills and knowledge.

Hours and Commitment: This is a part-time/contract position for the 2024-25 school year that follows the NYC DOE academic calendar.  Must be available during afterschool hours, Monday–Friday, 2:00 pm/2:30 pm – 5:45 pm/6:00 pm (start and end times depend on location). Flexible days, but five days a week is preferred. Must be available for orientation in late August or early September 2024. 

Location: Our afterschool programs operate at public school sites in the Lower East Side/Chinatown neighborhood.

Payrate: $16.00 per hour
