The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Associate Director, Major Gifts to manage fundraising and outreach efforts in the Eastern Region of the United States. The Associate Director, Major Gifts (Eastern Region) will join a dynamic team dedicated to raising major and leadership gifts to advance justice and rights worldwide. The Associate Director will have a mixed portfolio of vetted existing donors along with the opportunity to qualify prospects, building a new and growing revenue source for the urgent work of Human Rights Watch.
This full-time position will ideally be based in Washington D.C. or Greater Boston Area, though other cities in the Eastern Region of the United States may be considered. The Associate Director, Major Gifts will report to the Director of US Initiatives, based in Seattle, Washington.
Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely if local mandates necessitate. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.
Responsibilities:
1. Manage a portfolio of 150 donors giving a minimum of $10,000+;
2. Create a plan and individualized goals and strategies for each donor that is driven by the intersection of the donor’s passions and interests and programmatic priorities of HRW;
3. Collaborate with the US Initiatives team to expand support for the organization by researching, identifying, cultivating, servicing and soliciting new prospects, and existing donors;
4. Secure relevant project information, including budgets, to create offers, proposals and other collateral materials that are consistent with HRW branding;
5. Create regular reports on portfolio progress and demonstrate effective moves management;
6. Effectively collaborate with colleagues across the development department and in other divisions, demonstrating collegiality and superior relational skills;
7. Maintain rigorous records within HRW’s CRM (Salesforce) and demonstrate exceptional organizational skills;
8. Travel up to 30% time in the Eastern United States, principally in the Northeast and Washington, DC areas, when safe to do so; and
9. Perform other responsibilities as may be required.
Qualifications:
Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is required.
Experience: A minimum of five to seven years of fundraising experience, preferably in major gift fundraising.

1. A demonstrated personal commitment to advancing human rights and justice worldwide is required.
2. Proven effectiveness in one-on-one qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship is required.
3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English is required.
4. Commitment to the highest ethical standards and a demonstrated hunger to be successful is required.
5. Ability to work independently and satisfy defined metrics for success is required.
6. Strong Microsoft Excel ability, and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other computer software is required.
7. An approachable, optimistic, and a positive attitude is required.
8. Excellent management, organizational, and leadership skills is required.
9. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate to large groups, and with diverse populations at various professional levels is required.
10. Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with colleagues and with external stakeholders is required.
Salary and Benefits: HRW seeks exceptional applicants and offers competitive compensation and employer-paid benefits. HRW offers a relocation assistance package and will assist employees in obtaining necessary work authorization, if required; citizens of all nationalities are encouraged to apply. This position is based in the United States and the salary range would be USD 97,000- 110,000. Salary ranges outside of the United States vary based on location.
