Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is based in the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC) in Istanbul, Türkiye. The JCC was established as part of the Initiative on the Safe Transportation of Grain and Foodstuffs from Ukrainian ports (the “Black Sea Grain Initiative” or BSGI), signed by the Russian Federation, Türkiye, Ukraine on 22 July 2022, to facilitate safe navigation for the export of grain and related foodstuffs and fertilizers from designated Ukrainian ports. The United Nations signed the BSGI as a witness, and the Parties request the assistance of the Secretary-General in its implementation, in furtherance of the humanitarian mission of the United Nations and subject to its authorities and mandates.

The Driver will report to the Senior Administrative Officer (SAO).

Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Senior Administrative Officer (SAO), the Driver will perform the following duties and responsibilities;
– Drives vehicles safely for the transport of authorized personnel and for the transport of general cargo goods, including performing VIP and Standby Driver and related duties.
– Makes deliveries of parcels, documents, etc., between the office and other offices and institutions, e.g. Ministries, Embassies, etc.
– Makes minor purchases and collects urgent purchases from local suppliers as requested. Collect goods from customs with due regard to customs regulations and formalities. May make or collect payment for goods.
– Meets official personnel at the airport.
– Deals effectively and tactfully with officials and visitors.
– Takes care of the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicles, checks oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, etc.; performs minor repairs and arranges for other repairs, and ensures that vehicle is kept clean.
– Logs fuel consumption, maintenance, etc.
– Ensures that the steps required by rules and regulations are taken in case of an accident.
– Applies good judgment in the context of assignments given.
– Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

A high school diploma or equivalent.

Job – Specific Qualification

A valid national driver’s license and a clean driving record with no traffic violations is required.

Technical training as Motor Vehicle Technician (National Technician Certificate or equivalent) is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of two (2) years of progressive and responsible experience as a driver with a safe
driving record is required.

Experience in driving a variety of makes and models of vehicles, including vans and other
kinds of motorized vehicles is required.

Experience with the United Nations, international and/or non-governmental organizations, or embassies is desirable.

Experience in basic mechanics and electronics is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, working proficiency in English, and fluency in oral and written Turkish is required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a technical assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview

Special Notice

This is a project-funded post. The initial appointment is for a period of two (2) months. Extension of the appointment is subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

• The contract will be administered by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on behalf of OCHA.

• This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. This position is a General Service position and will be based in Istanbul. Candidates of the General Service category shall be of the nationality of the country where this position is located (limited to Turkish nationals).

• Appointment against this post is on a local basis.

• Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

• While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

• Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.
