The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Georgia (ACLUF-GA) seeks to hire a full-time Paralegal. ACLUF-GA is the state affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union. Our mission is to preserve and expand the individual rights guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution, the Georgia Constitution, and related federal and state civil rights laws. 

The Paralegal, supervised by the Legal Director, is a vital member of the Legal Department and directly contributes to the team’s efforts by providing critical administrative and litigation support to the legal director and all staff attorneys. He/she/they must be able and willing to work in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple responsibilities. 

Responsibilities include basic clerical and administrative support, assisting in litigation (particularly by helping to format and finalize legal documents), coordinating the legal intake process and conducting intake interviews, and working collaboratively and effectively as a team member to ensure that administrative needs are met. 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist attorneys in gathering and preparing materials for court hearings, depositions, and client meetings
  • Format and file legal documents with courts, and interface with court clerks’ offices as necessary
  • Administer the legal intake process, conduct intake interviews, and manage legal interns’ involvement in the intake process 
  • Maintain internal litigation tracking, including a document summarizing the current legal department docket and calendar of litigation deadlines and court dates 
  • Submit monthly expense reports for the Legal Director and Staff Attorneys 
  • Arrange for service of legal documents and research court rules and procedures 
  • Perform general clerical and administrative duties, including copying, scanning, filing, and mailing 
  • Assist in planning and coordinating legal department meetings 
  • Attend departmental and issue-oriented meetings to stay updated on ongoing work 
  • Handle administrative tasks for the legal internship program 
  • Submit and monitor FOIA and Open Records Act requests 
  • As a member of the affiliate’s support team, assist with overall office up-keep and cross-departmental meeting preparations and logistics
  • Participate in special projects, committees, and other duties as assigned

  • Ability to work with and center historically marginalized or oppressed communities of different cultures and backgrounds. This includes having a mature understanding of how structural racism, sexism, and prejudice against all kinds of marginalized communities pervade our society 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or paralegal certificate
  • At least two years of work experience as a legal assistant or paralegal 
  • Familiarity with court rules and procedures
  • Familiarity with PACER and other court filing systems
  • Basic understanding of issues related to civil and constitutional rights

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
