Photography and Videography Consultancy Services – Coalition on Violence Against Women

The Coalition on Violence Against Women (COVAW) is a national Kenyan not-for profit women’s rights organization. The organization was founded in 1995 as a response to the silence of the Kenyan society to addressing Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). We are committed to advancing women’s rights and a society free from all forms of VAWG.

2.0 Background and Rationale

COVAW with support from Urgent Action Fund is implementing a rapid response project to advocate for climate justice as a mitigation for Sexual, and Gender Based Violence (SGBV). Climate change and SGBV are interconnected since climate change increases the risk of SGBV. Women and girls are more susceptible to physical, sexual, and psychological violence during emergencies, especially disasters. In areas where COVAW works like in Narok and Nairobi counties, sexual violence, dropping out of school, forced marriages, FGM and child trafficking increase during such times. Key gaps that COVAW seeks to address through the proposed project include:

• SGBV during climate crisis with a special focus on sexual harassment and abuse especially at water points.
• Limited data on the impact of climate change on pastoralist women
• Lack of participation of women with intersecting identities in climate justice decision-making processes.

3.0 Objective of the Assignment

1. To develop a 5-7-minute documentary on the impact of climate change on pastoralist women and women living in the informal settlements of Nairobi.

2. To capture compelling photos showing the impact of climate change on pastoralist women and women living in informal settlements to be used during a digital campaign on the impact of climate change

4.0 Methodology

1. Conduct a desk review as guided by COVAW to highlight which issues need to be captured in the final products
2. Develop scripts that will be used as guidelines for the videos and photographs
3. Film short interviews with the program participants, partners, stakeholders and community members.
4. Take a range of pictures to show the impact of climate change on women’s rights

5.0 Deliverables

1. Detailed production and post-production schedule for filming and photography process
2. Draft scripts, including proposed interview questions for the short videos
3. Produce all photographs taken during the filming.
4. Produce a high-quality 5-7-minute video showing the impact of climate change on women’s rights

6.0 Consultancy period

The consultancy period will cover 10 days in December 2023/January 2024.

7.0 Key Competencies

1. Five years and above of experience working in a similar field.
2. Extensive experience in producing photographs and videos for local NGOs to reach the media, government actors, CSOs, communities and the private sector
3. Experience in working with local and international organizations.
4. Excellent technical capacities (state-of-the-art filming equipment preferably High Definition) to ensure smooth and high quality production.
5. Experience in development communication will be an added advantage.
