Migrant Offshore Aid Station

Migrant Offshore Aid Station/MOAS – an international humanitarian organisation dedicated to bringing aid and assistance to the most vulnerable communities in the world – is looking for a PR & Communication Officer to join the team in Malta.

Job Summary:

The PR/Communications Officer will support the Communications Department, actively contributing to implementing communication strategies and projects. Tasks within the Communications Department will be related to providing support on various platforms and media. The preparation of geopolitical reports and updates on migration, refugees and recent global developments is part of the job. He/she will produce, edit and write comms materials, including social media planning and posting, strategic input, advocacy, and proofreading. He/she will monitor media and campaign coverage and attend internal and external events.

Key Duties:

• Assisting the Head of Department with managing the NGO’s external image according to the media strategy and the content calendars

• Drafting and editing communications copy and material offline and online – in particular, social media creation and geopolitical reports

• Volunteers coordination and monitoring, particularly with comms materials and communication calendar, social media implementation, etc

  • Drafting internal report with updates on migration, policies, geopolitical implications

• Work with the comms team on PR and media activities, including preparation for conferences and talking points for interviews – dealing with media requests

• Preparing presentations and talking point

• Helping in organising comms materials for fundraising and networking events

  • Attending events when requested by management

• Tracking projects and media exposure

• Keeping up to date the media lists and database of press contacts

• Organise the archiving of digital materials and supervise their use

• Proofreading and editing English texts/materials

• Support the MOAS organisation with other duties as they arise

Key Attributes

• Must be an English native or bilingual

• Ideally based in Malta or available to relocate

• 4+ years of experience in an equivalent role

• Knowledge of media relations and social media strategies

  • An in-depth understanding of the migration phenomenon and geopolitical implications

• Degree in communications, international relations, international development, journalism, or equivalent experience in a relevant field.

• Proficient in MS Office/Apple; familiarity with design software (e.g. Photoshop, Canva) and content management systems (WordPress, Hootsuite, Mailchimp) is a plus

  • Work experience with an NGO focussing on humanitarian aid is an asset
  • Photo and video editing skills would be advantageous.

• Solid editing and proofreading skills in English

• Ability to lend their previous field and academic experience to the preparation of comms materials – on the rare occasion that this becomes necessary

• Strong attention to detail

• A good team player and able to work with people at all levels

• Flexible to changes and shows the ability to adapt to stressful situations as/when they arise

• Excellent presentation, written and verbal communication skills

• Demonstrated technical skills for the development, production, and delivery of online content

  • Excellent ability to thrive in a deadline-driven environment

• Interview and cultural mediation skills are a plus
