We’re seeking a Program Operations Officer based in New York or Washington D.C. to develop, implement and oversee a substantive operational or administrative area with a significant degree of responsibility, and carrying out a range of activities independently, in collaboration with program colleagues, and through cross-departmental collaboration to advance the program strategy.

The Climate Justice Program seeks to foster just transitions that enables a low-carbon global economy and resilient societies, especially in the global south. Our opportunity for maximum impact is through the promotion of more equitable, sustainable and accessible finance, implementing rights-based and sustainable practices, amplifying the voices and solutions of the most vulnerable people domestically and internationally, promoting democratic engagement and accountability mechanisms, and minimizing unintended adverse outcomes from climate measures.

As a Program Operations Officer at Open Society, you will:

  • Carry out significant aspects of one or more administrative functions with limited supervision – identify issues and develop new or changed processes in response to changing circumstances and solve problems collaboratively or with assistance from supervisor;
  • Develop and deliver budget plans for the Climate Justice team and its portfolio of work with guidance from senior colleagues;
  • Perform data collection/information gathering, tracking of progress (including the reporting of variance using established finance systems and protocols), thematic and financial analyses using data from a wide range of sources and identify possible impacts on the Climate Justice Program, its projects or activities with limited supervision;
  • Identify and implement improvements to processes within the Climate Justice Program (including collection mechanisms and reporting formats), and carry out related change management activities with minimal supervision
  • Interact with colleagues to obtain or convey information and to advance issues or projects as necessary and appropriate. Make proposals, suggest alternatives, support the contributions of others, and in other ways advance collective interests.
  • Generate a variety of materials from varied sources using both established templates/formats as well as creating new models based on understanding of the purpose of the materials and be responsible for problem-solving both individually and collaboratively, under limited supervision.

What we are looking for:

  • 5-7 years of experience and strong expertise in budgeting, financial and project management;
  • University degree or equivalent university degree or equivalent;
  • The ability to exercise specialized knowledge and provide technical guidance when required on planning, organizing, creating reports (including for various audiences), applying appropriate analytical processes and procedures to support the work, and professionally interpreting financial information, in order to draw appropriate conclusions and make relevant recommendations
  • Managing time and money: by making the best possible judgements based on financial and time availability;
  • Strategic thinking: by considering multiple options to achieve long-range goals, appropriately balancing risk and reward, selecting the best strategies for success;
  • Working well with OSF colleagues: by building collaborative relationships inside OSF through the understanding and development of others and own ideas; by using appropriate means and tone of communication to convey messages; by seeking input from others and ensure understanding.
