Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking for a highly qualified Regional Protection Coordinator for Europe. We are looking for a dynamic and competent colleague, who will be responsible for supporting us in quality protection programming at the regional and country level (Greece, Italy, Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Ukraine, plus the 3 new operational set-ups in Poland, Romania, Moldova). As the technical focal point for country protection staff, you will support the Regional Head of Programme in all regional initiatives involving protection activities and needs and lead initiatives focused on enhancing DRC’s policy responses upholding human rights and promotion of durable solutions.

About the job

You will be based in one of DRC Country of Operations in Europe and work with the European Regional Team.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Provide technical support to country offices, particularly in the following programmatic areas: legal aid / assistance, protection monitoring, case management, psychosocial support, and community-based protection to ensure overall quality protection analysis, strategies, and responses are in adherence with global standards and principles.
  • Lead the roll out of global and regional DRC protection standards and guidance, development of strategic protection documents, Standard Operating Procedures, capacity-building tools at the regional level.
  • Provide technical expertise and support to regional and country programmes on advocacy and policy papers and in program development, to ensure the harmonization of protection approaches across the different countries in the region.
  • Lead technical development of integrated programming approaches with DRC’s humanitarian mine action, shelter and economic recovery sectors.
  • Represent DRC in regional protection coordination meetings when relevant.
  • Liaise with DRC Global Protection Unit (GPU)/ protection technical experts at HQs and ensure coordination, dissemination of policies, standards or guidelines to countries and as well as act as interface between countries and GPU for specific requests coming from the field.
  • Carry out capacity assessment and build capacity of protection staff in countries as needed.
  • Support, also in person, the conduction of needs assessment in new areas of operation.
  • Backstop country protection managers/coordinators as required.

About you

To be successful in this role we expect you to be passionate about human rights and the protection of refugees, asylum seekers and migration. You will work directly with protection coordinators and managers in the individual country programmes and with the Global Protection Unit in DRC HQ. Moreover, we also expect the following:

Required

  • Master’s degree in social sciences, law, social work, international development, or other relevant field.
  • At least 5 years of international experience leading the implementation of protection activities, including support to community-based protection structures, protection monitoring and analysis, child protection and gender-based violence prevention and response.
  • Solid knowledge of European displacement scenarios, protection risks and protection frameworks is required.
  • Experience in the facilitation of training events and workshops; experience working with national partners, local/government authorities, and INGO.
  • Documented skills in project planning and design, budgeting and excellent technical writing.
  • Excellent skills in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Fluency in English and another European language.

Desired

  • Experience in working in several countries in Europe is a strong asset.
  • Experience in working in a regional / global office is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of asylum and migration laws and legal frameworks in Europe is a strong asset.
  • Good IT and IM skills are desirable.
