Plan International

. Background Information on Plan International

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.

We believe in the power and potential of every child. But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination. And it’s girls who are most affected. Working together with children, young people, our supporters and partners, we strive for a just world, tackling the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children.

We support children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood. And we enable children to prepare for – and respond to – crises and adversity. We drive changes in practice and policy at local, national and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge.

We have been building powerful partnerships for children for over 85 years, and are now active in more than 75 countries.

2. Requirements

Plan International are recruiting eight research assistants to support their State of the World Girls research on ‘Girl’s Activism and Campaigning’ for a period of six weeks (see timeline for details). This is a very exciting opportunity for those with specialised gender and research skills to take part in an international project and contribute towards several key research outputs. This consultancy will support coding of qualitative data collected as part of the ‘State of the World Girls’ research – carried out in 28 countries globally – and the findings of the technical report will feed into our campaign series of the past five years – Girls Get Equal.

The countries participating in the research are Australia, Bangladesh, Japan, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Malawi, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Togo, Canada, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Bolivia, Paraguay, Ireland, Netherlands, Denmark and Germany.

The approaches used for the qualitative data collection are as follows:

1) Activist Interviews – Peer to Peer

In each of the countries where the research will be conducted, young girls and women aged 15 to 19 with experience of activism, campaigning or influencing will be recruited as co-researchers. The co-researchers will be expected to recruit three young women and girls who meet the same eligibility criteria as themselves. Once they obtain consent, co-researchers will be asked to carry out interviews with participants. Each interview is expected to last 45 minutes to an hour. These will be semi-structured interviews to allow girls and young women to discuss important elements of campaigning, activism and the SDGs ‘off-script’. Areas that are covered include: What kind of campaigning are girls and young women involved in? How do they organise to effect this? Barriers and supports to campaigning, girls and women’s role in the social justice movement and whether campaigning supports this.

2) Focus Group Discussion – Activist Life Journeys

We will hold five online participatory focus groups discussions (10-12 girls or young women activists per FGD).

We will use a narrative visual method to explore girls and young women’s life over time. We are asking open-ended questions of their history as an activist and allow the girls and young women to map out significant moments in their life as an activist. Examples of questions could be: when and why did you first become interested in activism/campaigning, what were low and high points in your activist journey. Each focus group discussion is expected to last two hours.

For both approaches, all interviews and focus group discussions will be recorded, transcribed and then translated into English (where applicable).

Consultant coders will be hired to code the data on Dedoose. All recruited coders will have a training prior to coding commencing and there will be weekly check-ins and spot checks done for coding comparison queries. The research team will undertake the analysis and write up once coding is completed.
