Background on the Global Markets Team
The CHAI Global Markets Team (GMT) strives to build healthy marketplaces to ensure the sustainable supply of vital medical commodities. In particular, the Global Markets Team helps life science companies understand what products are needed in low- and middle-income countries, what prices are sustainable, and how to navigate complex regulatory and procurement environments.
GMT is responsible for managing relationships with major pharmaceutical and diagnostics companies which includes negotiating access programs, licensing agreements, product development agreements, and volume guarantees, amongst other activities.
Example market shaping efforts that CHAI has been involved with include the following:
- CHAI and The Hepatitis Fund announce pricing breakthrough to reduce cost of viral hepatitis treatment by over 90 percent
- New agreement secures historic US$1 price for HIV self-test
- Global partnership to make available 120M affordable, quality COVID-19 rapid tests for low- and middle-income countries
- Price reduction agreement for contraceptive implants increased distribution by >50% and will save more than US$300M
Position Details
This Senior Manager will lead key market-shaping activities for GMT related to Sexual, Reproductive, Maternal, & Newborn Health (SRMNH) as well as other priority areas. Their primary objective will be to design, maintain, and update CHAI’s global supply-and demand-side strategies, lead negotiations, and collaborate with a range of internal and external stakeholders to ensure sufficient supply of affordable and high-quality commodities to low- and middle-income markets. In doing so, the Senior Manager will develop strong relationships with global and country teams within CHAI, as well as with pharmaceutical suppliers and key opinion leaders.
We are seeking a highly-motivated, entrepreneurial individual with outstanding problem-solving abilities and communication skills that shares in CHAI’s mission and values. The Senior Manager must be able to manage a small number of direct reports, function independently, and have a strong commitment to excellence. CHAI also places great value on qualities such as humility, resourcefulness, and tenacity.
This role could be based in the US or in a CHAI program country, pending GMT and country team leadership approval. This role will require up to 25% travel.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement market shaping strategies to increase access to key commodities
- Manage the supply-side strategy and develop expertise in a range of relevant areas (including pharmaceutical costing and production economics, product development and commercialization strategies, financial and market analyses, and relationship management)
- Work with GMT leadership and other CHAI teams to develop workplans that support marketing shaping goals and achieve grant deliverables
- Cultivate strong relationships with senior executives of drug and diagnostics companies, and governmental, multilateral, and non-governmental organizations
- Lead negotiations with pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies on pricing and supply terms and also support other members of the Global Markets Team as they prepare for and lead negotiations
- Proactively identify opportunities to shape market dynamics for key products needed in LMICs and evaluate market opportunities for new drugs and diagnostics
- Represent CHAI effectively to major donors and external partners
- Engage CHAI’s scientific experts to provide technical support to suppliers as needed on topics ranging from product prioritization, production planning, regulatory approval processes, drug quality issues, demand forecasting, etc.
- Build and maintain institutional capacity and facilitate opportunities for knowledge sharing
- Effectively manage oneself, direct, and/or indirect reports within a matrixed organization
- Other responsibilities as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree plus 8 or more years of work experience
- Experience working in the private sector, ideally in strategy consulting, sales and marketing, and/or investment banking or similar fast-paced, results-oriented environments such as in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, diagnostic or medical device industries
- Exceptional analytical (qualitative and quantitative) and communication (written and verbal) skills; detail oriented
- Creative thinker, enabling development of transformational solutions to global health problems
- Entrepreneurial mindset, including ability to work independently, self-motivate, and propose and implement new ideas
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and set priorities
- Strong desire to work in a fast-paced, multicultural environment; demonstrated ability to build strong relationships quickly, externally and internally
- Ability to absorb and synthesize a broad range of information, including financial, regulatory, pharmaceutical, and scientific information
- Willingness to travel frequently
- High level of proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
