Purpose of the Position

The Editor and Communication Manager will oversee and contribute to the quality of internally created documentation as well as Montrose key messaging and external communications. You will represent Montrose, support the company’s delivery of high-quality international development programmes and nurture the growth of the company’s portfolio within the sector. You will champion the Montrose Vision, Mission and Values, have a willingness to learn, great attention to detail, communicate well with all stakeholders and be responsive and eager to grow with the company, demonstrating flexibility, creativity and initiative.

Montrose is an international development project management and consultancy company providing support to clients operating in the developing world. Specialised in the sectors of health, education, rural livelihoods and private sector development, our clients include bilateral and multilateral development agencies, the private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other development stakeholders.

Purpose of the position

  • To perform a quality assurance function over Montrose documentation and reports including copy-editing and formatting.
  • To support the business development team by producing bespoke documentation to support proposals and bid submissions.
  • Developing and implementing Montrose’s Communication Strategy.
  • Leading Montrose’s communications workplan setting and implementation for improved visibility and knowledge of Montrose among clients, partners and experts specifically.

Location: Remotely within the UK with willingness to travel overseas.

Core responsibilities of the role

  • Set editorial standards and integrate style guide across all communications.
  • Copyedit and quality assure programme reports and documentation/deliverables to the client.
  • Annually review and develop Montrose Communications Strategy and set annual workplan
  • Develop content and manage Montrose website, social media and other communication outlets.
  • Support the business development team with editing of proposals

Core responsibilities of the role

The Editor and Communications Manager will oversee and contribute to the quality of Montrose documentation, as well as supporting the business development team with proposal development and writing. They will lead the development and implementation of Montrose’s Communications Strategy including translating this into, and delivering against, an annual workplan. They will lead the company’s external communications and work with the wider company team on key messages and developing communications content for a range of mediums including publications, website and social media. They will be highly motivated and creative with a focus on attention to detail. They will be able to work on their own initiative with little direction, while being confident working with others virtually across multiple locations.

Technical Areas Specific to the Role

1. Editorial function (45%)

  • Set and assure editorial standards and integrate style guide across all communications
  • Oversee implementation and annual review of approved style guide
  • Maintain style guide and ensure use of templates across the Montrose group
  • Guide design and editing of communications content including text, images and video
  • Copyedit and quality assure programme reports and documentation/deliverables to the client

2. Communications (40%)

  • Annually review and develop Montrose Communications Strategy ensuring it remains relevant
  • Develop key communication messages and ensure that everyone in Montrose is versed in these and can confidently articulate Montrose
  • Lead on the development and writing of the annual communication workplan for Montrose and implement and monitor this and make suggestions for adaptation or revision throughout the year
  • Drawing from the programme management team and programme deliverables, develop content that is appropriate for Montrose’s various communication mediums: website, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. ensuring ongoing, increased and improved engagement from our audiences and ensuring communication is timely and aligns with Montrose strategic priorities for business development
  • Actively lead Montrose in suggesting and developing new communication tools and methods taking a creative approach for improved visibility and recognition – researching our competitors so tools stand out and convey our unique selling points.
  • Design, identify content, edit internal news to be shared within across Montrose global team. This includes recommending the communication tool/medium and frequency.

3. Business development (10%)

  • Contribute to Montrose proposal development by supporting proposal development and writing.
  • Editing and proofreading of proposals before submission.
  • Support with editing compliance and financial documentation required for tenders.

Administrative support (5%)

  • Support across the company to ensure internal filing systems (SharePoint) are logical, organised and maintained.
  • Maintain Montrose templates and version control of core company documents

Qualifications, skills and experience

Essential

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline
  • 3-5 years relevant work experience in development industry communications
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Demonstrated track record in professional writing
  • Attention to detail
  • Highly organised and methodical in approach to tasks
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to work to tight schedules and deadlines
  • Excellent communications skills and ability to work across geographies and cultures
  • Comprehensive experience designing and managing diverse social media platforms
  • Willingness to travel within the UK
  • Proficient in use of MS programmes including Word, PowerPoint, Teams and SharePoint

Desirable

  • Knowledge and experience of the international development sector particularly in education, health, climate and environment, agriculture and livelihoods
  • Experience of working with a range of clients across the development sector including governments, NGOs, UN agencies and the private sector
  • Ability to create infographics and communication tools/materials
  • Proficient in use of MS programmes including Excel, Publisher, Yammer, Stream, Sway
